-Lindsey Lohan in Mean Girls
I'm a sucker for universal commonalities because it makes me feel connected to cultures very different than mine.
Songkran is the Thai New Year. It's celebrated by dowsing water on everyone with water-guns, hoses, and buckets. I don't even want to think about where the water came from or how much I accidentally swallowed. Thank goodness I didn't get Delhi Belly. I joined my friend, Thumb, and his wolf pack (The Hangover 2, anyone?) to celebrate. Royal City Avenue is a designated Entertainment Zone in Bangkok exclusively for bars and clubs and is turned into a huge outdoor party for Songkran. With bottle service at our table and barrels filled with water on either side, we were set to get wet and wild. It felt like a "spring break party" scene.
With the introduction above, you might be thinking that I came to the cheesy realization that celebrations are a universal commonality. My realization was much cheesier though: GIRL CODE. Girls know, understand, and respect GIRL CODE, and that is something that transcends cultures and language barriers. For you men out there, GIRL CODE is like the Da Vinci Code, but more complicated. Although I couldn't verbally communicate with Thumb's girlfriends, I danced the night away with them and had so much fun! We watched each other's backs for creepers and fixed each other's watery makeup. I felt like I fit right in, like a blonde Thai girl.
Another realization I had: 2 different cultural New Years for me this year. Remember Ecuador, here? How lucky am I?!
